Tio Pelon’s Salsita was born in late 2015 out of Oscar’s 90 square foot apartment kitchen. Having taken on the newly-found hobby of food preservation, he resorted to a family recipe that needed to be shared with the world!
Salsita Norteñas Mexicanas (North Mexican Style Salsa) straight from the kitchen of grandma Emma’s ranch. After receiving grandma’s blessing, Oscar shared her salsa publicly and found some overall excitement from family and friends. Salsita Emma is the only red salsa on the shelf listing red jalapeños, not tomatoes, as the first ingredient.
The name of our instantly-recognizable brand came to be when my first niece was born and I officially turned into a Tio (or uncle). When I combined the word ‘Tio’ with my nickname ‘Pelon’, it had a nice sound to it. The tone was fun and playful and that was when the brand name ‘Tio Pelon’, which translates into “Uncle Baldy”, was born.
I come from McAllen, Texas where BBQs, or as we call them “carnitas asadas” are a weekly family event. We eat, tell stories, dance and normally have a great time! One of the most important elements of Carnitas Asadas (aside from the meat of course) are the salsitas that accompany the delicious taquitos of grilled meats.
Our salsitas put a smile on people’s faces every time they taste them. That is why we continue to do what we do! I strive to share my Norteño heritage and share the delicious foods we have to offer in our region.
