Tio Pelon’s Salsita was born in late 2015 in Oscar’s 90-square-foot apartment kitchen. After picking up the hobby of food preservation, he turned to a treasured family recipe that deserved to be shared with the world.
Salsita Norteñas Mexicanas (North Mexican–Style Salsa) comes straight from the kitchen of Grandma Emma’s ranch. With her blessing, Oscar began sharing her salsa publicly — and it quickly earned excitement from family and friends. Salsita Emma remains the only red salsa on the shelf with red jalapeños, not tomatoes, listed as the first ingredient.
The name of the instantly recognizable brand came when Oscar’s first niece was born, making him officially a Tio (uncle). Pairing “Tio” with his nickname “Pelon” had a fun, playful ring to it — and so Tio Pelon, meaning Uncle Baldy, was born.
Oscar grew up in McAllen, Texas, where BBQs — or carnitas asadas — are a weekly tradition. These gatherings are filled with food, stories, music, dancing, and laughter. And at every carnitas asada, alongside the sizzling meat, you’ll find the salsitas that bring the taquitos to life.
Our salsitas still put a smile on people’s faces with every bite. That’s why we keep making them — to share the flavors of our Norteño heritage and the delicious traditions of our region.
